Alom-Wilom for enhancements
In IndiaFont (a popular typography software for Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati), the Alom Wilom concept is a specialized feature used to create professional-looking calligraphy.
The name is inspired by the yoga breathing technique Anulom Vilom (alternate breathing), but in the context of design, it refers to stylized decorative strokes (swooshes) applied to the beginning and end of words.
1. What is the Alom Wilom Concept?
This feature allows you to instantly add artistic flourishes to your text. Instead of manually drawing complex curves or importing external clip art, the software has these decorative elements built directly into the font’s logic.
ALOM: Refers to the decorative stroke or “swoosh” added to the start (left side) of a word.
WILOM: Refers to the decorative stroke or “swoosh” added to the end (right side) of a word.
2. How it Works
The feature works by using specific keyboard shortcuts or a dedicated panel within the IndiaFont software (like IndiaFont V3 or V4) to swap standard characters for their “variable” calligraphic versions.
Keyboard Shortcuts: In many versions of IndiaFont, you can use
Shift + <for Alom andShift + >for Wilom.Variable Options: Most IndiaFont calligraphy fonts come with multiple “Alom” and “Wilom” styles. For example, a single font might have 10 different ways to end a word—some might be long and wavy, while others might be sharp or leaf-shaped.
Automatic Integration: The software intelligently attaches these strokes to the letters so they look like a continuous, hand-drawn brush stroke.
3. Why Designers Use It
Speed: You can create a professional wedding card or social media post heading in seconds.
Balance: It helps balance the “white space” around a word, making a logo or title look symmetrical and complete.
Consistency: Since the strokes are designed to match the specific font style, the thickness and texture of the “swoosh” perfectly match the letters.
